Mexican
Honey Wasp

This image shows a large, mature nest of the Mexican Honey Wasp (Brachygastra mellifica), also commonly known as the Mexican honey wasp or simply a honey wasp. These social wasps are native to parts of the southern United States (particularly Texas and Arizona), Mexico, and Central America. They build distinctive, enclosed, football- or pear-shaped nests made of a tough, grayish-brown papery material (chewed plant fibers mixed with saliva). Unlike many other paper wasps that build open-comb nests, Mexican Honey Wasps construct fully enclosed nests with a tough outer envelope, often featuring small entrance holes visible on the surface. The nest in the photo is attached to a tree branch and surrounded by dense foliage, which is typical for this species as they prefer nesting in trees, shrubs, or sometimes on man-made structures.

*Why This Nest Should Be Removed
Mexican Honey Wasps are generally considered beneficial in their natural habitat because they are important pollinators and predators of garden pests (such as caterpillars). However, when they nest in close proximity to human activity—such as in residential yards, parks, or near walkways—they can pose a significant safety risk. -

Defensive Behavio: While not as aggressive as yellowjackets, Mexican Honey Wasps will vigorously defend their nest if they feel threatened. Disturbances like lawnmowers, tree trimming, or children playing nearby can trigger a swarm response, resulting in multiple stings. -

Large Colony Size: Mature nests like the one pictured can house hundreds to thousands of wasps, increasing the potential for a serious defensive attack. -

Sting Risk: Their stings are painful and can cause severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) in sensitive individuals. Pets and livestock are also at risk.

Honey Production: Interestingly, these wasps do produce a small amount of honey, but it is not harvested like honeybee honey and does not outweigh the safety concerns in urban or suburban settings.

Structural Concerns: Nests can become very heavy and may eventually damage branches or nearby structures if left untreated.

For the safety of your family, pets, and property, professional removal is strongly advised. Attempting to remove or treat this nest yourself can provoke the colony and lead to dangerous encounters. Our trained BEEKEPEERS use safe, targeted methods to remove the nest and relocate or eliminate the colony with minimal impact on the surrounding environment. We also provide preventative advice to reduce the chance of future nesting in your area. If you have spotted a nest like this on your property, contact us immediately for a free inspection and safe, humane removal service. Early intervention prevents the colony from growing larger and becoming more defensive. Protect your home and loved ones — don't let hidden nests become a stinging surprise!
